We’re getting to the busiest time of year again. In addition to closing out your unit plans before the holidays and keeping your students focused, you also have to think about all of your holiday shopping.
If your list includes a Secret Santa gift for a coworker, relax! Try one of these fun ideas to come in under budget — and without a “World’s Greatest Teacher” mug in sight!
1. Gift Cards
We’re fond of injecting a little caffeine into our fellow teachers’ lives with a gift card to a nearby coffee shop, but you can choose any store you know they’ll love. It’s fast, easy and always a hit.
2. A Travel Mug
Most teachers have a collection of kitschy coffee mugs, but they’re not that useful — especially if you work with rambunctious elementary school students who could top over your hot drink at any moment! A quality travel mug, on the other hand, is a safe alternative that will keep a drink hot all morning long.
3. Good Pens
It’s nearly impossible to hold on to a pen in a busy school, so resupply your Secret Santa with colorful gel pens to add a festive touch to January grading.
4. Stress Relief
5. Homemade Goodies
There’s a reason cookies are common at Christmas! To make your gift stand out, try baking up a breakfast treat or savory bread instead — it may never make it home for winter break!
6. Desktop Organizers
7. A Good Book
Aim for a page-turner and encourage your friend to take some “Me Time” to read it over vacation. There’s nothing more relaxing than quality time with a good book — especially when you don’t ordinarily get much time to read for pleasure.
The very fact that this is a frivolous, unrelated-to-school gift is what makes it so lovely. Just make sure they’re easy to carry home if your gift exchange is the day before holiday break.
9. A Journal
A bound journal is useful for general note-taking, creative interludes or some “Dear Diary” stress relief. Add a great pen for a thoughtful gift that works well for just about anyone.
10. A Hall Pass
Give the gift of time by offering to cover your fellow teacher’s class during your prep one day — she/he will definitely love you for it!
